Canada and Russia twitter spat comes amidst Arctic conflict

The conflict between Canada and Russia over the Arctic Ocean is the focus of a new article in IB Times after a Twitter feud broke out between the two countries’ NATO delegations.

Both Canada and Russia own parts of the Arctic, a region seen as having untapped commercial potential.

“We’re talking about the centre of a large, inhospitable ocean that is in total darkness for three months each year, thousands of miles from any port,” says UBC’s Michael Byers, Canada Research Chair in Global Politics and International Law. “The water in the north pole is 12,000ft [3,650 metres] deep and will always be covered by sea ice in the winter.”
