UBC research recognized at Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Society Conference

A paper titled “Self-assessment of insulin sensitivity” co-authored by UBC Chemical and Biological Engineering researchers won third place prize at the 37th Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Society Conference held in Vancouver. The team of Melissa Barazandegan, Fatemeh Ekram, Ezra Kwok and Bhushan Gopaluni received a $200 prize. Click here for more information.

UBC professor receives alumni award from Trent University

UBC adjunct professor Farah Shroff has been awarded “The Spirit of Trent” award for contributions to society and her alma mater, Trent University. Shroff teaches at the Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Family Practice and the School of Population and Public Health at UBC. Throughout her 30-year career, Shroff has contributed to midwifery, holistic health, social justice and community wellness. She was a social scientist of Canada’s first midwifery education program at Ryerson University. For more information, click here.

Land and Food Systems PhD student receives 2014 CIFST scholarship award

UBC PhD candidate (Food Science) Isabelle Lacroix has been awarded the 2014 Weston Graduate Award from the Canadian Institute of Food Science and Technology (CIFST). Lacroix’s thesis topic is “Dietary Proteins as Precursors of Dipeptidyl Peptidase-IV – Allies to Complement Pharmacotherapy in the Management of Type 2 Diabetes.” Watch a video of her presenting a condensed version of her thesis in last year’s UBC 3-Minute Thesis competition here.

President’s Installation: September 12, 2014

The formal installation of Professor Arvind Gupta as the 13th President and Vice-Chancellor of UBC will take place on Friday, September 12, 2014. UBC students, faculty, staff, alumni and the community are invited to a full day of events on the Vancouver campus. View more information on the events here.

• Breakfast with the President
7:30-9:30 a.m. (venue TBA)
Twenty students, 14 faculty and 14 staff members from UBC’s Vancouver and Okanagan campuses will be randomly selected by draw to have breakfast with the President. Enter Breakfast Draw.

• Installation Ceremony
10 – 11:30 a.m. Chan Centre for the Performing Arts
Featuring live music and greetings from around the world, welcome Professor Gupta and celebrate the successes of UBC’s global community. A general reception at the Flagpole Plaza will follow.
