CIHR funding helps improve lives of cancer patients

Assistant Professor Mehdi Moradi from the Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Dr. Peter Black from the Dept. of Urologic Sciences, hope to better assess the risk and metastasis of prostate cancer. Their latest project, which recently received $100,000 in research funding from Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), aims to build a tissue classifier that will enhance the diagnosis and risk assessment of prostate cancer. Creative writing prof makes Toronto Public Library One Book Selection for 2014

Creative Writing Chair Steven Galloway’s international bestseller The Cellist of Sarajevo has been chosen as Toronto Public Library’s One Book community read for April 2014. As part of the library’s month-long literary festival, Keep Toronto Reading, the program invites all Torontonians to read the same book and then come together to talk about it. In partnership with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the library will present 22 pop-up cellist performances across the city. For more information, click here.

2014 Volleyball World League comes to UBC

UBC’s Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre will be a host venue for the intercontinental round of the 2014 FIVB Volleyball World League. Canada (ranked 11th) will take on Belgium (ranked 37th) at UBC on June 13 and 14. Two of Team Canada’s players are former UBC volleyball players Blair Bann and Steve Gotch. Pharmaceutical prof appointed dean, College of Pharmacy and Nutrition, University of Saskatchewan

Pharmaceutical sciences researcher and educator Dr. Kishor Wasan has been selected as the new dean for the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Pharmacy and Nutrition. The university’s Board of Governors approved the appointment for a five-year term effective August 1, 2014. Wasan is a professor and associate dean of research and graduate studies in the UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the director and co-founder of the UBC Neglected Global Diseases Initiative. Pharmaceutical prof appointed dean, School of Pharmacy, Memorial University

After an extensive national search, UBC’s Dr. Carlo Marra has been appointed as a professor and the new dean of the School of Pharmacy at Memorial University. Marra is currently a professor in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and director of the Collaboration for Outcomes Research and Evaluation at UBC. For more information, click here.

Nursing prof appointed vice-president, Research at SFU

Nursing professor Joy Johnson will become Simon Fraser University’s Vice-President, Research starting Sept. 1, 2014. Johnson has been a faculty member with the UBC School of Nursing since 1993. In 2008 she was appointed Scientific Director of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research’s Institute of Gender and Health. Her program of research focuses on health promotion and health behavior change. In 2010 she was recognized as one of British Columbia’s Women of Influence. For more information, click here.

2014 Dialogues on our City's Future

Andy Yan, a planner with Bing Thom Architects and adjuct professor at UBC’s School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP), will be presenting a talk called: “10 Data Points You Need to Know About Your City.” From demographics to civic participation to real estate, this presentation will look at some of the measures of what makes our city. Audience members will be encouraged to participate in a dialogue of what might it take to build a “good city.” The talk will be moderated by SCARP director Penny Gurstein.

Special Olympics BC charity free-throw contest at T-birds game

During half-time of this season’s final game, when the UBC women’s basketball team takes on the University of Victoria Vikes at home, 10 Special Olympics B.C. basketball players will attempt to sink as many free-throws as possible to raise money for two Special Olympic organizations.

Special Olympics is the world’s largest sports organization for people with intellectual disabilities. UBC is hosting the Special Olympics Canada 2014 Summer Games this July.
