Event: UBC’s Faculty of Education kicks-off the Year of Indigenous Education with the Musqueam Lecture: Excellence in Education

The Faculty of Education, at UBC’s Vancouver campus, is recognizing 2012-2013 as the Year of Indigenous Education. Throughout the year, the Faculty will bring together students, community members, faculty, teachers, and leaders in the field to engage in dialogue, share insights, and explore issues related to Indigenous education.
To mark the beginning of this yearlong initiative, the Faculty of Education is sponsoring an annual ‘Musqueam Excellence in Education Lecture’ in partnership with the Musqueam First Nation. For this inaugural lecture, panelists from the community will share their experiences and talk about opportunities for Indigenous education. Panelists include:
- Tammy Harkey – Musqueam First Nation, Band Councillor, Chair of the Musqueam Education Committee and Manager, National Aboriginal HIPPY
- Marny Point – Musqueam First Nation, Coordinator of the NITEP Urban Field Centre and Instructor for the Musqueam Hən̓q̓əmin̓əm language course
- Aaron Wilson – Musqueam First Nation, 3rd year UBC Law student
- Kory Wilson – Kwakwaka’wakw First Nation, Director of Aboriginal Education and Services, Vancouver Community College
The event will include performances by the Tsatsu Stalqayu Coast Wolf Pack, led by Francis James, and catering by Salishan Caterers from the Musqueam First Nation.
