UBC dental team returns from Penelakut First Nation

Dental and dental hygiene students, alumni, and faculty of UBC Dentistry, as well as community dentists and other volunteers, donated their time and professional skills last weekend to the people of Penelakut First Nation.  The community is located on Kuper Island, a small southern Gulf Island located off the coast of Chemainus, B.C. on the east coast of Vancouver Island.

UBC undergraduate students win awards for international research

UBC student Andrew Hughes was awarded Best Oral Presentation at the Universitas 21 Undergraduate Research Conference for his research on the role of brain hemispheres in processing emotion.  

Undergraduate student Nicholas FitzGerald won the Most Imaginative Research award for a system he developed that automatically summarizes online product reviews. 

The Universitas 21 Undergraduate Research Conference was held in Melbourne, Australia from July 1-7.  The conference celebrates the best creativity in international undergraduate research. 

UBC funded three students to showcase their work at the conference. The selection process was facilitated through Go Global at UBC.  Eligible candidates had won prizes at UBC’s Multi-Disciplinary Undergraduate Research Conference or received UBC’s Undergraduate Research Award.

Engineering students receive EUS scholarships

The recipients of the 2010 Engineering Undergraduate Society (EUS) Scholarships are Frank Liu (Electrical and Computer Engineering), Alim Jiwa (Mechanical Engineering), Laz Milovanovic (Engineering Physics) and Sean Heisler (Integrated Engineering).

The EUS Scholarship was established in 2009 to recognize demonstrated leadership, personal initiative, innovation, and service to the UBC engineering community. Each year, two junior awards of $500 and two senior awards of $1,000 are awarded to undergraduate engineering students.

Oral health and oral cancer in Vietnam: UBC alumna receives top award for research

Dental hygienist and UBC alumna Sherry Priebe (MSc ‘09, BDSc ‘03) was awarded the World Dental Hygienist Award in the research category by the International Federation of Dental Hygienists for her oral health and oral cancer research in Vietnam.

GEERing Up! summer camp kicks off

GEERing Up! UBC Engineering and Science for Kids is about to kick off its 15th year of summer camps. Young boys and girls will be exposed to fun and exciting activities, interactive demos and hands on projects while learning about the value of engineering and science. Camps run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m, Monday to Friday until the end of August.
