UBC researchers announced in first phase of CERC competition

Four UBC proposals were selected in the first phase of the inaugural competition for the Canada Excellence Research Chairs (CERC) program. Forty proposals from 17 universities were announced last week. UBC’s proposals were in the areas of Biofuels and Biorefining Innovation, Neuroscience, Quantum Materials and Devices and Translational Prostate Cancer Genomics.

These universities will be invited to nominate world-class researchers for the second phase of the competition. Up to 20 successful chairholders and their research teams will each receive up to $10 million over seven years to establish ambitious research programs in Canada.

CERC provides awards to Canadian universities to help them attract and support world-class researchers in four research areas: environmental sciences and technologies; natural resources and energy; health and related life sciences and technologies; and information and communication technologies.

UBC Earth and Ocean Sciences appoints new head

Prof. Greg Dipple has been named head of the UBC Dept. of Earth and Ocean Sciences. Dipple, who joined UBC in 1992, is an internationally recognized expert on fluid-rock interactions who is studying how to use mining residue to soak up green house gases. Dipple will assume the appointment effective July 1.

UBC swimmer Annamay Pierse named CIS female athlete of the year

UBC swimmer Annamay Pierse has been named the 2008-09 Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) female athlete of the year.

Pierse received the award at a gala ceremony in Toronto. She takes home a $10,000 scholarship to attend a Canadian graduate school.

The awards show airs on TSN, May 16 at 2 p.m.

UBC students win best poster prize

A UBC electrical and computer engineering team won best poster prize at the BCNet 2009 Conference, Green Technologies for Research and Learning, in Vancouver this week. The poster, titled Cell Link: Real-time Data Tracking of Automobiles via Cell Phone , was presented by undergraduate students Roland Hui , Christine Yun-Yi Chen , Jason Chan and graduate student Huasong Cao under the supervision of Prof. Victor Leung .

UBC hosts golf tournament fund-raiser

The annual UBC Golf Classic tournament fund-raiser will be held in support of the Walter Gage Fund. Since 1999, proceeds from the campus-wide tournament have provided financial support for non-curricular student projects and activities.
