Call for nominations: UBC President’s Staff Award
Nominations are open for the President’s Staff Awards. This is a new category designed to expand the awards available to UBC Vancouver staff. All permanent staff with a minimum of three years continuous service are eligible to win for the following awards:
- Leadership and Creativity
- Enhancing the UBC Experience
- Global Citizenship

UBC assoc. professor named new director of Fisheries Center
Assoc. Prof. Rashid Sumaila has been appointed as the new director of the UBC Fisheries Center until June 2013. He has been the acting director since November 2008.
Sumaila was recently selected as one of nineteen Leopold Leadership Fellows, awarded to environmental researchers across North America. He was also awarded a Pew Fellowship for Marine Conservation Fellowship in 2008 and a Peter Wall Institute Senior Early Career Scholar Award in 2007.

B.C. digitization program wins merit award
The B.C. History Digitization Program (BCHDP), an initiative of the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, has been awarded the Programs and Services Merit Award by the British Columbia Library Association for its ability to connect communities across B.C. through their histories.
The BCHDP grants matching funds for digitization projects that provide free online access to B.C.’s unique historical material.

Prof. Carl Walters receives Killam teaching prize
Prof. Carl Walters, Dept. of Fisheries, was awarded the 2009 Killam Teaching Prize for Graduate Instruction. The Killam Teaching Prizes are given to faculty members in recognition of excellent teaching. It will be presented at the 2009 Congregation Ceremonies in May.

UBC Library Vault e-newsletter gets the gold
UBC Library Vault’s e-newsletter, eVault has won the gold medal for best electronic newsletter from the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education. New images from UBC’s libraries and their special collections are being posted every month.

UBC engineering students awarded scholarship
The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C. and BC Hydro have awarded scholarships to 16 UBC engineering students for their exemplary achievement and contributions to the advancement of the engineering and geosciences professions.

Vancouver artists at the Ike Barber Learning Centre
Vancouver artists Lorna Brown and Laiwan will talk about Threshold (Cont.), a video installation that examines how writers, thinkers and philosophers have dealt with the topic of boredom. Brown’s installation is currently exhibited at the Koerner Library.

Health Sciences Online launched
The School of Population and Public Health has announced the launch of
the Health Sciences Online (www.hso.info). HSO is the first website to
deliver comprehensive, authoritative, free, and ad-free health
sciences knowledge. A virtual learning center, HSO provides free
online links to a comprehensive collection of over 50,000 top-quality
courses and references in medicine and other health sciences
disciplines, and is building a virtual health sciences training
programs.
