New appointments in the Faculty of Applied Science
Prof. Tyseer Aboulnasr, former Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Ottawa, has been appointed Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science, effective Sept. 1.
Aboulnasr’s research is in the area of signal processing algorithms and applications. She obtained her Bachelor of Engineering degree from Cairo University, and an MSc and PhD from Queen’s University, all in electrical engineering.
As of July 1, several engineering departments also have new Heads: Prof. Reza Vaziri (Civil); Prof. André Ivanov (Electrical and Computer); Prof. Warren Poole (Materials); and Prof. Bern Klein (Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering). Each has been appointed to serve five-year terms.

New direction for the First Nations House of Learning
Madeleine MacIvor has been appointed Director pro tem of the First Nations House of Learning (FNHL), taking over from Assoc. Prof. Richard Vedan after his seven years of leadership. MacIvor has worked at UBC since 1989 in several capacities: as the Coordinator of Student Services for the FNHL, First Nations Coordinator in the Faculty of Forestry, and as the Associate Director of the FNHL since 2000. She is a graduate of the Native Indian Teacher Education Program (NITEP), Ts’‘kel Graduate Studies and is currently working on doctoral research around the development of Aboriginal post-secondary education policy in B.C.
MacIvor will be assisted by William Lindsay, Associate Director pro tem. Lindsay has been working as a Aboriginal Student Services Coordinator at the FNHL since May 2007. He has a background in Aboriginal education, is a graduate of NITEP and has an MA in History.

Mech 2 program recognized nationally
The Department of Mechanical Engineering’s Mech 2 program received the 2008 Alan Blizzard Award for its collaborative program design and delivery at the 28th Annual Society of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education conference last month. Mech 2, UBC’s mandatory second-year program for mechanical engineering students, aims to develop analytical, practical and design skills through integrated lectures, tutorials, labs, design projects and other activities.
The award was established to encourage, identify and publicly recognize collaborations in university teaching that enhance student learning. For more information, visit: Mech 2 Recognized for Improving Student Learning
Film screenings from the Belkin and the Film Centre
In partnership with VanCity Theatre at the Vancouver International Film Centre, UBC’s Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery present an evening of film screenings related to its current exhibition, Idyll. Marking the 40th anniversary of May 1968, Idyll addresses aspects of that revolutionary decade. The films – by Al Razutis, David Rimmer and Arthur Lispett – are both documents and analyses of that time.

The works of Rabindranath Tagore in seminar
The Centre for India and South Asia Research will host a seminar on the works of Rabindranath Tagore, Asia’s first Nobel laureate (in 1913 for literature). The seminar will be given by Muhammad Habibur Rahman, lawyer, historian and former Chief Justice (1995) and Chief Adviser to the Caretaker Government of Bangladesh (1996).
