Fundraising campaign launched for UBC’s Norm Theatre

A ‘Restore The Norm’ fundraising campaign is seeking the support of UBC students, staff, faculty, alumni and local cinophiles to return the Normand Bouchard Memorial AMS Theatre to its former glory.

The campaign aims to refurbish the popular film, performance and conference venue with modern theatre seats, a new lobby, new theatre curtains, carpeting, and painting. The campaign has raised approximately 70 percent of its $125,000 target, but still requires $40-70,000, says Kevin Keystone, VP Finance for the Alma Mater Society and President of the AMS Foundation.

Of the campaign’s several fundraising initiatives, organizers are "selling" seats for $199. In recognition of support, donors will have a plaque installed on the seat that they "buy."

"We’ve had unbelievable support from the university and our corporate partners," says Keystone. "We’re now asking students and staff at UBC to bring us home and donate $199 to ‘Buy a Seat’ for The Norm."

For more information, contact Kevin Keystone, AMS, at 604.822.3973, or Sarah Alikhani, FilmSoc, 604.822.3698. To "Buy a Seat" online, visit www.ams.ubc.ca/norm.

Food Bank finds mysterious pyramid

Staff at the Greater Vancouver Food Bank were pleasantly surprised Monday morning to find a pyramid of red and white soup cans at the front entrance to their building.

The white structure of approximately 800 cans of Campbell’s tomato soup was adorned with a red "E" on all four sides, suggesting a link to UBC Engineering, although the Food Bank has received no official claim of responsibility.

The first week of February is celebrated annually by the UBC Engineering Undergraduate Society as Engineering Week.
